Bishop Absalon's castle

According to the Danish chronicler, Saxo Grammaticus, in 1167 Bishop Absalon of Roskilde built a castle on a small islet in the waters off the coast of the small town of Havn - later to become the city of Copenhagen.

The castle stood for 200 years before it was conquered and demolished by the Hanseatic League in 1369.

The ruins of Bishop Absalon's castle still exist and may be visited in the roofed excavations below the present palace.
